ABOUT THE ARTIST

Sammy Figueroa brings the music of his acclaimed album “Searching For A Memory: Busco Tu Recuerdo” to Judson’s Live. The album, which features Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba and singer Aymée Nuviola, is dedicated to Sammy’s father, the 1950’s romantic singer Charlie Figueroa, with Charlie’s classic boleros transformed into modern Latin jazz arrangements. In 2023 this album received more airplay on Orlando’s local jazz station WUCF than any other album and was recently honored in Puerto Rico as Album of the Year by the Fundacion Nacional de la Cultura Popular. Cuban singer Aymée Nuviola reunites with Sammy at for a weekend at Judson’s, performing the recklessly romantic ballads of Charlie Figueroa with drama and emotion. The brilliant Cuban pianist Kemuel Roig takes over Gonzalo’s part on keyboards with virtuosity and beauty. And Cuban saxophonist, Grammy winner Felipe Lamoglia also joins Sammy as part of a spectacular band.

Double Grammy nominee Sammy Figueroa has long been regarded as one of the world's great musicians. As one of music's leading percussionists, he has played on countless records and is well-known for his versatility in a multitude of musical styles. He has recorded and toured with some of the world's greatest pop stars, such as David Bowie, Chaka Khan and Mariah Carey and played with a multitude of distinguished jazz artists including Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Quincy Jones, George Benson, and many more. He has recorded five solo albums, two of which were honored with Grammy Nominations. As one of the world's greatest congueros he is currently considered to be the most likely candidate to inherit the mantles of Mongo Santamaria and Ray Barretto.

Aymèe Nuviola, “La Sonera Del Mundo” is a multiple Grammy and Latin Grammy winning singer, musician, songwriter and actress. Born in Havana, Cuba into a family of musicians, she originally trained as a classical pianist and composer while becoming a truly spectacular singer. With influences ranging from American jazz, bossa nova, and pop to Cuban son, bolero and fílin. Aymée is a powerful, glamorous and exciting performer. In 2021, she was selected by People en Español magazine as one of the 25 most powerful Latina women in the United States and was also named by Hola magazine to the "Latina 100 Top Powerhouse 2021" list.

There are many great Cuban pianists on the scene but Kemuel Roig stands out as one of today’s most brilliant and creative artists. A master of improvisation, he offers a perfect blend of virtuosity and musicality and a deep understanding of both modern jazz and traditional Latin music. As a protégé of Gonzalo Rubalcaba Kemuel is the perfect master pianist to take command of the arrangements on Sammy’s album and bring his own brand of excellence to the music.
